The "OOPS" Arbor

by The Saw Doctor

I would like to share with you a little hole saw accessory called the Oops Arbor that saved the day when we were renovating our house last year. I was drilling holes into the ceiling to fit the down lights thinking that I was helping my nephew who is an electrician.

My nephew marked out on the Gyprock where the down lights were to be installed and strictly told me to use a 92mm hole saw. Ok not a problem!

But for some strange reason that is beyond my comprehension I grabbed the 54mm hole saw and went happily on my way drilling the holes. It was not until later that my nephew realised the mistake that I made.

"Hey uncle Graeme!" my nephew called out "...the downlight hole diameter is way too small."
"What do you mean?" I replied

Then I took one look and went Oops - sorry!
Maybe it’s got to do with the fact that I sharpen a lot of 54mm hole saws?
Who knows!
Fear not I replied...this can be fixed!
This is a job for the Oops arbor which Starrett has made specially for blokes like me who make little mistakes!

What is an Oops Arbor?
The Oops arbor replaces the drill from the hole saw arbor. This allows you to screw on the smaller hole saw that was mistakingly drilled and use it as a pilot drill.

You can then screw the required hole diameter which in this case is the 92mm hole saw onto the hole saw arbor.

The Oops arbor now becomes the centre drill which the 54mm would be screwed onto. Place the Oops Arbor into the hole saw arbor and secure the Oops arbor into place. The 54mm hole saw will now go into the hole that I mistakenly drilled and steady the hole saw whilst the 92mm hole saw cuts the required diameter hole.

The Oops arbor could also come in handy when you want to modify an existing hole in a cabinet or cupboard where you think a larger hole would be better suited.

Luckily for me I was able to redeem myself from my little mistake. It reminds me of what my Boss use to say when I was doing my apprenticeship. A man who never made a mistake never made anything!

Until next time..... Happy Cutting from the Saw Doctor! 😄
